About Our Candles
Every candle by True Northern Life is made from natural soy wax and hand poured right here in Canada. We use cotton wicks and recyclable glass jars because we believe a high quality product can also be a sustainable one.
We strive to make candles that are clean burning, chemical free, and better for our environment. We don't use additives so our candles may have slight imperfections, but these are a sign of a handmade product, and we'd rather have each candle be unique than add unnecessary and potentially harmful ingredients.
Most commercially made candles use paraffin wax, which is an unsustainable petroleum product, and the wicks can contain zinc or even lead. When burned, candles with these substances release harmful chemicals and can actually worsen the air quality of your home. We don't want these chemicals in our own home, and they're certainly not something we want to include in the handmade candles we sell to you.
Notes On Soy Wax
Soy wax candles have a "memory", where the first burn determines the performance of the candle for the duration of it's life. This is why it's important to allow the candle to achieve a complete melt pool the first time you burn it. A complete melt pool is when the wax has melted all the way to the edges of the container. Depending on the room conditions, it should take approximately one hour per inch of diameter to achieve a complete melt pool.
If a complete melt pool is not achieved on the first burn, either due to the environment in which it's lit, or due to not having enough time to burn, the candle may tunnel. This is why it's so important to ensure you have enough time allow for a complete melt pool to form the first time you light the candle.
Soy wax also tends to pull away from the glass and crystallize when exposed to varying temperature, particularly during shipping. These are both completely normal occurrences, and will not affect the candle in any way. You may also notice crystallization as the candle ages.
And because we don't use any unnecessary chemicals, we don't add any UV inhibitors or stabilizers to the colour. This can result in the colour fading when left in the sun, but again, this won't affect the performance of the candle itself.
At True Northern Life, we strive to be open and honest with regards to all aspects of the products we sell (as per our No-Nonsense Policy). If you ever have any questions regarding our candles, please don't hesitate to contact us.
